Community college

I dropped out of high school during my sophomore year and was arrested a number of times in my late teens for various drug-related issues.

I worked all sorts of odd jobs from installing linoleum to mowing lawns to washing big-rig trucks.

I entered community college at 22 and spent four amazingly transformational years there.  I was lucky enough to be surrounded by faculty that believed in me at a time when I didn’t believe in myself as much as I should have.  I grinded my way to semester after semester of solid A work.  It wasn’t because I was naturally gifted, it was because I wanted it, was disciplined in my commitment, and along the way I learned how to become a good student.

I ultimately transferred to the University of California, Berkeley where I earned a degree in Business.  I spent the next 25 years valuing privately held businesses and intellectual property in the context of high-stakes commercial litigation.  I am a CPA, CFF, and ABV.

To say that CC had a huge impact on the trajectory of my life would be a massive understatement.  Students should understand the power they have to transform the trajectory of their own lives at community college.  And community college faculty and administrators should revisit the profound influence they have on that journey.

Financial literacy

There are all sorts of inequities in this world, and right up there with the best of them is access to simple, sound, and profound financial literacy.

I have had countless conversations with my students about the costs and benefits of particular colleges, and I am constantly asked about my thoughts on cryptocurrency and meme stocks. I have often found it frustrating that so many of my students make significant uninformed and poor financial decisions before they graduate that tend to lock them into a path far below their true potential.

There are no personal financial planning textbooks targeted at low-income community college students that address these issues from their perspective (as well as substantially more important issues that don’t even hit their radar).  So I wrote my own.  And it is also free to everyone.

Although the book was written with community college students in mind, it is a wonderful guide for anyone’s financial plans. It is full of practical advice about saving, credit, debt of any kind, insurance, mortgages, investments, careers/job searches, and so much more. It is full of information and advice that is hard to find in any one place

  1. Professor Heath goes above and beyond to ensure that his students are not only successful in accounting, but also successful after they leave his classroom. He is passionate about the accounting profession, and never fails to demonstrate genuine care for his students. From mastering a teaching style that caters to any/every student, to offering a plethora of growth opportunities, his students are given the tools necessary to reach their fullest academic and professional potential. I’ve undoubtedly become a better student and a better person after being enrolled in Professor Heath’s financial accounting course over the last several months. NOT taking his class or advice would be a disservice to oneself.

  2. Professor Heath has been one of the most encouraging and genuine professors I have ever had. Although the course I am taking is fully asynchronous, he still manages to make sincere connections with his students and show that he truly does care for them and their success in the class. Not only does he provide great academic knowledge to his students, but he also gives real life advice by using examples from his past experiences. Professor Heath’s class has pushed me to do better in a topic that I often struggled with, and I can confidently say his course has greatly changed my perception and knowledge on the topic.

  3. Professor Heath presents accounting material in a clear and direct way. The lectures help synthesize the readings and Power Point presentations. He is very approachable and more than willing to answer questions that students have. He also goes above and beyond to share his experiences with college and professionally. These stories and lessons help prepare students outside of the class. He also does a great job creating materials. His financial literacy book is such a helpful primer on what to do with your money. Overall a great instructor.

  4. Professor Heath is by far the best instructor I’ve ever had. He engages with the class and is relatable to his students. He is extremely fair in his class and grading policies. His teaching style is clear and easy to follow. But more than that, he is a great person and mentor who really takes an interest in his class and his students. I walk away from each class with more than just knowledge on the subject matter; I also receive great, practical advice on my education, future career, and just life in general.

  5. Professor Heath is a wonderful Professor. He has great, engaging communication style with his students and overall is ready to help at any second. With that in mind he always makes sure to be transparent about the work and time needed to become successful in this class without being overbearing or condescending. I came into his accounting class with not much interest, but will be leaving with more knowledge than I expected.

  6. Professor Heath is a great professor. Clear, concise communication and in your face motivation that makes you think more about how much effort you’re putting into your work. I never cared a lot about my classes, but taking his class had made me rethink my motivations and what I wanna do in my future

  7. Professor Heath’s positive attitude and teaching skills bring so much joy and excitement to class. He is truly dedicated that his students are successful inside his class and outside in their personal goals. By being compassionate with his students he is able to create great lectures in class in which everyone feels comfortable in asking questions. His teaching style is definitely really encouraging and helpful as the material can be challenging.
